Miele is one of the oldest appliance brands being founded in 1899 by Carl Miele and Reinhard Zinkann and going on to produce its first washing machine in 1911. Today the company is still privately owned and mostly produces all its own appliances, one of the few remaining manufacturers to do so.

Miele have always been obsessed with the quality of their products, favouring quality over price reductions unlike most every other manufacturer in the industry although, recently, there has been some compromise seemingly being made on Miele's lower range products. Quite how true this is only time will tell but Miele do try to live up to their motto of "Immer Besser" or, "Forever Better".

As far as we know (Miele are very cloak and dagger on some things) the refrigeration range is actually produced by a company called Liebherr for Miele although Miele, again as far as we know, do not produce appliances for any other manufacturer.

Miele's fandom in the industry is almost legendary with many retailers and repairers swearing that they are the best machines in the world and, that is probably partially true. But, it is based largely on Miele's reputation and the fact that there is little competition out there in the same league as Miele in terms of quality. However Miele's Achilles Heel is on the servicing side where they fall down miserably on pricing and transparency.

You won't get Miele appliances cheap, if you want a cheap machine then I'm afraid you will have to look elsewhere. What you will get is s superbly engineered appliance that is built to be durable and last, regardless of the type.

It is argued that it is actually a false economy to buy a poorly built appliance and, we would agree with that and urge you to look at it as an investment

So on the whole, very well built with good performance, but servicing costs are where Miele fall down (see below).

Recently however Miele has been offering a ten year parts and labour warranty on selected appliances as a promotion. What terms or restrictions there are on this warranty we do not know, the guarantee is underwritten by Miele themselves.

The LG (Lucky Goldstar) Group who's current slogan is "Life's Good" is a large South Korean conglomerate which produces electronics , mobile phones, petrochemical products and of course washing machines and fridge freezers as well as a host of other things.

Created in 1947 by Koo In-hoe as Lucky Chemical Industrial Corp. the name LG comes from an abbreviation of "Lucky Goldstar", the company's name for many years until 1995 when it was re-branded. Before changing their name, many electronic products and microwaves were sold under the brand name Goldstar, while some other household products that were only available in the home Korean market were sold under the brand name of "Lucky."

LG started to make washing machines in 1969.

In 1989 LG (Goldstar) opened a microwave oven plant in the UK having previously opened one during 1988 in Turkey.

Recent introductions to the market, in what looks to be a bid to move the brand upmarket, are the Steam Direct washing machine which allegedly uses steam to enhance wash performance and the internet fridge freezer which has a screen on it to access the internet.

UK Whitegoods has officially asked for the test results and data to back the claims made for the new Steam Direct washing machine and LG and their PR company have failed to provide any evidence to back the claims being made. The steam function can also only be used on certain cycles, notably not the common cycles that a UK consumer will use.

Although LG are a massive global company and do have a reasonable worldwide share of the appliance market, surprisingly, LG's UK market share was a mere 2% in 2010.

Since the brand was taken on by Beko the Leisure brand has been seemingly put above Beko in the pricing order, putting it into the lower mid market area but using much the same product behind the fascia as equivalent Beko models. In other words, you could buy exactly the same appliance with slightly different aesthetics and look for less by choosing a Beko variant instead.

Haier are based in Qingdao, China where it was formed in 1984, and are now one of the largest appliance manufacturers in the world. Impressively in such a short life it is now billed as the world's largest white goods manufacturer. It has 240 subsidiary companies and more than 50,000 employees around the world. Haier, which produces everything from fridges and washing machines to TVs and mobiles, was ranked 86th most influential brand in the world by World Brand Lab in 2006, the only Chinese brand to be ranked in the top 100 for three consecutive years. It is also the official home appliances sponsor of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

However, that doesn't mean to say that they are any good, it only means that they sell a lot of stuff and their track record on reliability thus far has been nothing short of abysmal.

Haier have produced primarily dishwashers and some refrigeration for brand names such as Diplomat, CDA, White Westinghouse, Teka, Hygena and many more besides as well as starting to creep into even more mainstream household name brands now.

Now Haier have launched into Europe under their own brand name and, in the UK at least, were being sold exclusively by Comet. Since the demise of Comet it appears that Haier have gone it alone dealing with some trade distributors and the independent trade.

In fairness, since the purchase of Fisher & Paykel and several shake ups, the quality on Haier products does appear to have improved, likely putting them on a par with most other budget brands. We would hope to see this trend continue after the recent purchase of GE.

Hotpoint began in the United Kingdom in the early 1900's when Earl Richardson invented a new electric iron with the heating element the length of the iron which converged to be hot at the point, hence the name of 'Hotpoint'. In 1911 the Hotpoint Electric Heating Company was formed and in 1920 an agreement was set up with General Electric (GE) of the USA to create an agency in order to sell GE branded domestic appliances in the UK. This agency was called Hotpoint Electric Appliance Company Limited (HEAC).

Hotpoint started to produce washing machines under its own brand name in 1923 and one of the biggest factories was situated at Llandudno Junction in North Wales.

In 1929 HEAC joined the Associated Electrical Industries (AEI) group and in 1940 purchased a factory in Peterborough to produce refrigerators. In 1967 the GEC group bought AEI when the name was changed to Hotpoint Limited. In 1982 a new factory in Kinmel, North Wales was opened for the production of washing machines.

In 1989 Hotpoint became part of a new division of the GEC Group called 'General Domestic Appliances'

General Domestic Appliances was formed as a division of the GEC Group in 1989 and encompassed not only Hotpoint, Creda and Cannon but also the brands of Redring (electric showers) and Xpelair (air management systems). Later in 1989 GE of the USA bought a 50% share of the General Domestic Appliances division. This encouraged closer communication between the individual companies and resulted in the transfer of the manufacture of gas cookers and fires to Creda's Blythe Bridge factory in 1994.

In April 1998 Hotpoint, Creda and Cannon officially merged to become General Domestic Appliances Limited, an official 50/50 joint venture between GE and the GEC Group (later to become Marconi). Redring and Xpelair became collectively known as GDA Applied Energy.

In December 2001, Merloni Elettrodomestici of Italy who where responsible for the major European appliance brands of Ariston, Indesit, Philco and Scholtes purchased the 50% share in General Domestic Appliances Limited from Marconi for £120M. GDA Applied Energy was sold in a management buy-out.

On the 1st January 2005 Merloni Elettrodomestici changed it's name to Indesit Company.

In 2014 the entire Indesit company, including Hotpoint, was bought by Whirlpool further cementing Whirlpool's status as the largest appliance manufacturer in the world.

Hoover, despite perceptions, was never a British company, it was in fact an American company which has never been under British ownership.

The Hoover story begins in 1907 when Murray Spangler, an inventor who worked nights as a janitor, was cleaning rugs in an Ohio department store. Legend has it that all the dust raised from his broom aggravated his asthma, and he set about finding a solution to the problem.

Spangler gathered a tin soap box, a fan, a sateen pillow case and a broom handle, then assembled an odd-looking, cumbersome contraption that managed to pull the dust away from the air he breathed. He quickly realized that this "suction sweeper," as he called it, had enormous sales potential, and he began seeking financial backing.

Spangler's family friend, Susan Hoover, agreed to try the machine in her home. Before long, she was singing its praises to her husband, W.H. "Boss" Hoover, owner of a leather goods manufacturing shop. Hoover bought the patent from Spangler in 1908, retained him as a partner, and soon had six employees assembling six units a day in a corner of the leather goods shop.

To educate the public about the product, Hoover placed a small ad in the Saturday Evening Post offering 10 days' free use of a Hoover suction sweeper to anyone who wrote and requested it. But instead of sending the cleaner directly to the potential customer, he chose a reputable store in each city from which requests arrived and sent the product to that store. He sent a letter requesting that the store manager deliver the machine and keep the commission from any resulting sale, then offered the store the opportunity to become a dealer for the Company. This laid the groundwork for a national dealer network which continues today as the main channel of distribution for Hoover products.

"Boss" placed trained Hoover sales representatives in dealer showrooms to demonstrate the products and also had them travel door-to-door conducting home demonstrations.

Meanwhile, engineers were designing new and improved methods of cleaning carpet in keeping with the mission of the Hoover engineering and design development program, which had been established in 1909. One of their most noteworthy innovations was the beater bar, introduced in 1926, which was the basis for one of the most memorable advertising slogans in history: "It beats as it sweeps as it cleans."

And other "firsts" have been developed by Hoover engineers over the years as well. These include the disposable paper bag, the vacuum cleaner headlight, the self-propelled feature and the side-mounted attached hose feature, for which Hoover received a patent in 1936.

The Company was owned by the Hoover family until the 1940s, when it became publicly owned. The Company's stock was first traded on Aug. 6, 1943. In 1985, Hoover was acquired by Chicago Pacific Corp., and in 1989, Maytag acquired Chicago Pacific. As a result, Hoover belongs to a family of companies with some of the most prestigious names in home appliances, including Jenn-Air, Blodgett and Magic Chef. Today, Maytag's diversified business portfolio is organized into four groups: Home Appliance Solutions Group, of which Hoover is a major division; Commercial Solutions Group, which includes commercial cooking, laundry and floor-care products, and vending machines; Global Solutions Group, which develops business opportunities worldwide; and Emerging Business Solutions Group, which exploits opportunities in electronic commerce and business systems.

F&P was founded by Woolf Fisher and Maurice Paykel in 1934 as Fisher & Paykel Industries, initially importing refrigeration and laundry products from the USA. Production commenced in 1939. The company still has a family connection, Gary Paykel being the Group chairman. The company also manufactures industrial production machinery and has major interests in healthcare markets.

Its headquarters are at East Tamaki, Aukland, New Zealand.

They are a relatively new name in the UK and Europe, having formed a "strategic partnership" with Whirlpool in 2003. Keynote feature is the extensive use of stainless steel on refrigeration and cooking products, as well as digital control. The "Dish Drawer" dishwasher is a unique concept, comprising two "mini dishwashers" in one unit, which slide in and out as drawer units.

The "SmartDrive" laundry products beloved of UK Whitegoods Australasian Forum are not sold in the UK or Europe.

In June 2006 Fisher & Paykel aquired the Elba cooking brand in Europe to expand it's European range of appliances with the sale completed in 2007 for €78 million which also meant that they acquired the Delonghi brand of cookers and other appliances at the same time.

In 2009 Haier took a large chunk of Fisher & Paykel and now owns a considerable stake of the company equity.

Fridgemaster is a budget brand that was formed by the ill fated HI Group supplying budget cookers, fridges, freezers and fridge freezers.

The brand faltered in 2012 with the demise of the HI Group although, at the time of writing, there were persistent rumours in the industry that the Chinese Hisense company was set to buy both the Fridgemaster and Frigidaire brands from the Hi Group administrators.

So far as we know the original manufacturer of most Fridgemaster products, the Chinese company HiSense Kelon, has now taken over the brand.

Daewoo Electronics is a home electronics company which currently produces air-conditioning units, refrigerators and washing machines that are sold globally and is is the third largest electronics firm based in South Korea after Samsung and LG.

Established in 1971, it has since grown into a global business with more than sixty four production sites, research and development and sales centres in more than forty countries worldwide.

Daewoo Electronics Sales UK (DESUK) was established in November 1993. The UK Daewoo operation majors on fridge freezers, mainly side by side American style refrigeration, home laundry products like washing machines and washer dryers, microwave ovens and vacuum cleaners.

The Daewoo company went through a bankruptcy in 1999 after Asian financial crisis and is currently owned completely by a group of creditors.

In October 2010, it was announced that the creditor group owning the company is to sell it to an Iran-based electronic company, Entekhab Industrial Group of Iran would buy the firm for $529 million in November 2010 from its creditors.

Entekhab industrial Group competed with Electrolux of Sweden for the acquisition.

In June 2011, it was reported that creditors of Daewoo decided to drop the deal with Entekhab group over funding uncertainties, Entekhab Group had threatened to take legal action in response although no reports of such action have yet come to light. At which point Electrolux was rumoured to still be interested in purchasing the Daewoo brand, reputedly to expand its presence in the Asian region, but none of the rumours ever came to fruition and up until this point if writing in 2012 Daewoo's future remained uncertain.

Then late in August 2012 Daewoo was bought fro its creditors by the Dongbu Group who outbid Sweden's Electrolux. Quite what this means for Daewoo in the future is unclear.

CDA Domestic Appliances

CDA was established in 1991 by Ian Kershaw, the CDA managing director after a successful career running his own distributorship and sales of appliances.

CDA's primary focus has been in the design elements of the appliances which they sell, some are quite striking although it will depend on your taste as to whether or not they will appeal to you. This is CDA's forte though, making the appliances look that little bit different and using limited production runs for certain designs.

Of course the lower end appliances which we see most of are produced to a price for budget kitchen installations and contract building works. Some of the appliances are good and some aren't so good but all are backed by a five year parts warranty and now a two year labour warranty as well.

In addition to the usual ovens, hobs, hoods and cookers CDA have introduced built-in coffee machines, domino hobs and induction hobs to their range lately and they do cover a considerable range of appliances now. Washing machines seem to be Italian in origin for the most part whilst dishwashers are mainly Whirlpool or from Haier for the cheap ones.
