Question: How to replace a fan element in my smeg cooker

Answer: The following article is just a brief overview on how to replace a fan element on a Smeg cooker and the instructions may vary depending on the age and type of appliance. We recommend that only qualified electrical engineers with the correct skills carrry out the work mentioned below.

Before working or removing any part of the appliance the electrical power supply must be turned off and the appliance is disconnected from the power supply.

Please also make sure that all the oven function switches are in the off position ( please consult your user hand book) before removing any of the covers or touching any of the wiring.

Please note that failure to turn off the electrical supply before working on the appliance or disconnecting can result in electrical shocks which can cause death.

The fan element on smog cooker or range cookers is fitted to the rear of the oven cavity. To replace the element will require that the rear cover of the cavity to be removed to expose the fan element. Depending on the age of your Smeg cooker or oven the fan element can be removed by undoing the fixing screws (new models only) within the oven cavity. On older Smeg models the rear oven casing will have to be removed to gain access to the fixing screws at the rear of the appliance. Once the screws have been removed make a note of the wiring then disconnect the wiring (please test to make sure there is no power to the element using a meter before touching the connections). Replace the element with the new one reconnect the wiring as per your notes and re-fix the element in place using the fixing screws replace any of the covers that you removed to gain access to the element/appliance. Once the new element has been fitted and the covers are back on you can now turn on the power to test that the element is now working correctly by selecting the fan oven function.

To replace a grill or bake element depending on the age of the cooker will require you to remove the rear covers of the appliance. Once the covers have been removed locate the upper or lower elements depending on which one needs replacing. Make a note of the wiring to the element, a drawing may help, pay particular attention to the colours especially the earth wire (green and yellow stripped)

The elements are held by two or four captive nuts, please undo and keep save. The element can now be removed from inside the oven cavity. Please note on some models there may be retaining clips inside holding the element in place. Once the old element has been removed, please insert the new element and refix using captive nuts. Replace the wiring as per your wiring/notes making sure the colours of the cables are in the correct place and the earth wire is attached. Replace the appliance covers and turn on the power and test.

Question: There is a fan running and I am not using the cooker

Answer: Most of our modern appliances are fitted with a cooling fan to prevent the controls getting too hot. The fan can run for up to 30 minutes after the oven has been switched off for safety reasons. During this period the fan may switch off and on.

Question: My grill element goes on and off while in use, is this normal?

Answer: The grill element will turn on and off during use, this is normal and is used for temperature regulation.

Question: My cooling fan runs when I set my Smeg cooker on the automatic setting?

Answer: On setting automatic cooking time on the clock, the cooling fan will run. The Smeg Opera range cooling fans have a low noise level and low energy consumption. This is not a fault with your Smeg Cooker.

Question: What is the temperature of the bottom element which is non variable on the Smeg Oven SUK62CMF?

Answer: 250 degrees (+/- 10%)

Question: When the fan function is selected the oven does not heat up.

Answer: When the fan function is selected the fan element around the fan motor heats up if this does not happen when this function is selected the fan element may be faulty or the oven thermostat. It will require a Smeg sevice engineer to check this for you.

Question: Is it normal that the cooker oven fan keeps turning even after I've switched the oven off?

Answer: The oven cooling fan will continue to operate for around 20 minutes after the appliance has been switched off to enable the oven to cool down more quickly.

Question: My Smeg cooker SUK61MPX5 is not working properly and the display is showing err3, what is wrong with my appliance?

Answer: The error 3 means that the temperture probe is not sensing temperature increase or decrease, this error code cannot be reset, therefore an engineer is required to investigate this further.
