Question: What does the ECO cooking mode do?

Answer: The ECO function, a feature of various Smeg models, is particularly useful if you only need to cook a small amount of food on one shelf. A negligible amount of energy is consumed thanks to the programme's combination of grill, bottom heating element and fan (in fan models).

Question: What's the difference between fan and fan-assisted ovens?

Answer: Fan ovens have a heating element around the fan behind the rear panel. The electric element heats the air being circulated by the fan and evenly distributes it throughout the oven. Fan-assisted ovens, on the other hand, have two heating elements, one in the roof and one in the base with the addition of a fan in the rear. This allows you to use all the shelves at once without the flavours of different foods intermingling. You'll save time, energy and money too.

How to replace a fan element on a Smeg oven

The following article is just a brief overview on how to replace a fan element on a Smeg oven and the instructions may vary depending on the age and type of appliance.

We recommend that only qualified electrical engineers with the correct skills carry out the work mentioned below. Before working or removing any part of the appliance the electrical power supply must be turned off and the appliance is disconnected from the power supply. Please also make sure that all the oven function switches are in the off position ( please consult your user hand book) before removing any of the covers or touching any of the wiring.

Please note that failure to turn off the electrical supply before working on the appliance or disconnecting can result in electrical shocks which can cause death.

The fan element is fitted to the rear of the oven cavity. To replace the element will require that the rear cover of the cavity to be removed to expose the fan element. (please test to make sure there is no power to the appliance/element using a meter before touching the connections) Depending on the age of your smeg appliance the fan element can be removed by undoing the fixing screws (new models only) within the oven cavity. On older models the rear oven casing will have to be removed to gain access to the fixing screws at the rear of the appliance. Once the screws have been removed make a note of the wiring then disconnect the wiring. Replace the element with the new one reconnect the wiring as per your notes and re-fix the element in place using the fixing screws replace any of the covers that you removed to gain access to the appliance. Once the new element has been fitted and the covers are back on you can now turn on the power to test that the element is now working correctly by selecting the fan oven function.

Question: We have just installed our new Smeg DO81CSS double oven and it it wonderful. We chose it partly because of its AA rating and we are considering whether to turn it off at the mains when not in use to save energy. However, I suspect that the stand-by power used of the LED clock is very low. Can you please give me a figure for this stand-by power so we can decide.

Answer: The clock display is only using a few milliamps to display the time. Disconnecting at the switch / socket after each use would mean that the clock has to be set each time the appliance is to be used.

Question: There is a fan running and I am not using the oven

Answer: Some of Smeg appliances are fitted with a cooling fan to prevent the controls getting too hot. The fan can run for up to 30 minutes after the oven has been switched off for safety reasons. During this period the fan may switch off and on.
