Tricity Bendix Domestic Appliances

Appliance Manufacturer & Brand Information

In 1987 Electrolux purchased the white goods division of the British company, Thorn-EMI which held the rights to the brands Tricity, Stott Benham and Parkinson Cowan.

Quite how and when Electrolux came into posession of the "Bendix" brand for appliances is not entirely clear but the old Bendix manufactured appliances have been highly regarded by both trade and public alike. No doubt this is why the brand was bonded to Tricity, a predominantly British manufacturer and brand name famed for its range of cookers.

It was rumoured that in 2010 the brand would be dropped by Electrolux.

Electrolux seem to have positioned the new Tricity Bendix brand in the lower segment of the market in an atempt to have a presence at the cheap end whilst not detracting from the higher value , Electrolux and AEG brand names also available in the UK.

It would appear that the brand has now been dropped.

Stoves Domestic Appliances

Appliance Manufacturer & Brand Information

Stoves has been manufacturing cooking products on Merseyside since 1920. The company specialises in making products that are tailored to meet the needs British customers, and offers a full range of built-in, freestanding and range cookers in all fuel types and configurations.

In an industry that has traditionally seen little by the way of innovation, Stoves has received a series of high-profile awards, including Millenium Product status for its Rotostar gas technology and the Prince of Wales Medal for Range cooker design.

As with GDHA, Stoves appliances are best described as mid-range products in general terms. Some cookers, such as Genus, are slightly innovative and do therefore command a price premium.

Rosieres Domestic Appliances

Appliance Manufacturer & Brand Information

The Italian Candy Group acquired the Rosieres brand in 1987 at which point it was one of the leading and most respected French appliance manufacturers. Rosieres was established 1837 in France, and is one of the oldest brands in kitchen appliances.

Rosieres brand logoBefore Candy bought the brand they were pretty much unheard of in the UK but have been marketed as an upmarket brand since that point by Candy. The signature appliance of the brand is the "Paul Bocuse" range of range cookers which were endorsed b y the famed French chef.

Many users swear by the product and they do appear to have a long lifespan, some cookers that we supply spare parts for are over twenty years old.

Paul Bocuse is one of the most prominent chefs associated with the nouvelle cuisine, which is less opulent and high-calorie than the traditional haute cuisine.

He operates the luxury restaurant l'Auberge du Pont de Collonges in his home town, as well as a chain of restaurants under his license.

Bocuse also operates a franchise in Walt Disney's Epcot Centre in Florida as well as one in Euro-Disney, the United States one perhaps the reason that there have been several Bocuse range cookers found in the United States.

As is to be expected from an upmarket brand, irrespective of the brand owner, the prices on Rosieres appliances are steep. At the time of originally writing this article in 2006 the best part of £2000 will be required to purchase a Bocuse range cooker. At the time of the revision in 2012 that had creeped up to nearly £2500.

In recent times there has been some criticism levelled at the build quality and quality of spare parts used on current Paul Bocuse range cookers. It is also worth noting that Rangemaster may be a better alternative bet and will quite possibly cost less to buy however, the Bocuse is still a good range cooker.

The other products in the range seem to be normal re-badged Candy fare and are not really anything special in our opinion.

Maytag Domestic Appliances

Appliance Manufacturer & Brand Information

Maytag are a very old and respected brand in the USA that came to the UK and Europe in 1989 when it acquired Hoover from Chicago Pacific and then subsequently sold the UK Hoover operation to Candy of Italy. Other than the flirtation for a few years with Hoover, the actual Maytag brand is little known in Europe and best known for it's line of American side by side fridge freezers.

However over expansion and a general downturn in the appliance market as competition increased from low cost (and poor quality) former Soviet states and Asia brought Maytag under increasing pressure, especially in its home US marklet, leading to the acquisition of Maytag by Whirlpool in 2005 ending the company's independence that had endured for 112 years.

Many of the products on sale today from Maytag are merely re-badged Whirlpool Group products.

Maytag UK was based in Redhill, Surrey and remained so for some time after the acquisition by Whirlpool but, ultimately, the staff and operations were absorbed into the Whirlpool operation for the UK.

Until that point Maytag sold it's American top-loading large capacity washing machines which were popular with the semi-commercial market as well as a line of front loading washing machines for the European market that were made by Asko in Sweden. To our knowledge Maytag has not taken any of the new generation of washing machines, tumble dryers or drying cabinets from Asko that are sold by ISE.

Refrigeration products were Maytag's forte and they were imported from Maytag's other production facilities and were made by them.

Also the Admiral brand was owned by Maytag and used as a budget brand for their products although this was almost exclusively refrigeration.

Actual "Maytag" products were in the main pretty good and reasonably reliable if a little pricey. Now however, in a good many cases, you can buy the same product with a Whirlpool badge as opposed to a Maytag one in some cases for a lot less.

Liebherr Domestic Appliances

Appliance Manufacturer & Brand Information

Liebherr Domestic Appliance division is a high quality German manufacturer of refrigeration products that encompasses domestic fridge, freezer and fridge freezer models and also manufacturers high quality commercial refrigeration units.

Liebherr is a family owned business and has been since it's inception in 1949 and, although known popularly for their heavy plant and crane machinery used in the construction industry, have carved an enviable reputation as a quality refrigerator manufacturer. The company employs over 35,000 people across 130 countries.

In our opinion, Liebherr is about as good a domestic refrigerator as you can buy. The quality of the plastics, the build and the components that Liebherr use far and away exceeds that of its nearest rivals. This does mean that Liebherr products are considerably more expensive but, it also means that they are far more durable and long lasting, making them better value for money over the life of the appliance.

Liebherr also manufacture Miele refrigeration units.

Lamona Domestic Appliances

Appliance Manufacturer & Brand Information

We are often asked who Lamona are by people and the actual answer to that question is more complex than it really deserves to be.

Lamona is a brand name used exclusively by Howdens Joinery as an own-label brand. This makes price comparisons on appliances supplied by kitchen fitters and builder that use Howdens very difficult, if not impossible for people to make. It is a popular tactic employed by many larger companies that supply to both trade and public alike in our industry.

Howdens Joinery was originally a part of the MFI Group and many of the older Lamona appliances share their DNA with the other MFI brands, Hygena and Diplomat. However in 2006 the MFI retail side of the business was sold to Merchant Equity Partners whilst the original company retained Howdens. MFI entered into administration in 2008 long after the ties had been severed from a business perspective with Howdens and the Lamona brand.

There is little history of the actual Lamona brand that can be found beyond that it is apparently a breed of chicken and, probably the reason for the name is that a chicken is used in the Howdens logo and that Lamona is merely a subset of that business. Whatever the reason, there is little more information that you will learn searching elsewhere online about the brand.

However, neither Lamona or Howdens as a company produce a single appliance themselves. Every single Lamona appliance is merely a re-badged version of something else.

This largely places Lamona in the same league as the likes of Caple, CDA, Kompact, Diplomat and a raft of others.

From what we can gather products are largely sourced from Beko, Candy, Fagor Brandt, Glen Dimplex and the other usual rebranding specialists around the globe.

Like many of these sorts of brands the premise to customers is that Lamona is that "little bit better" but the reality is, it's just a reworking of another brand's appliance or appliances with a Lamona badge slapped on the front.

We have seen cooking, refrigeration products, integrated fridges and freezers from Beko.

Laundry from Candy.

Integrated dishwashers from the usual Chinese suspects of Haier and Midea among others.

Cooking products such as hobs, hoods, ovens and cookers are mainly from Beko and others as well as some appearing from the Glen Dimplex stable for range cookers and freestanding cooking.

In other words, it's nothing special and you will often find yourself able to save a lot of money by shopping around and buying these appliances direct without be re-branded to Lamona with a price hike added. That said, often there are deals on offer when these appliances are bought as part of a kitchen and, they are no worse than anything else in the price range.

John Lewis Domestic Appliances

Appliance Manufacturer & Brand Information

A few years ago John Lewis started to sell its own brand of appliances with a range of washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwasher and cooking appliances and has now grown the range to incorporate some integrated products as well.

Largely these are made by the Electrolux Group on John Lewis' behalf. Some products, dishdrawer and some refrigeration products are re-branded Fisher & Paykel appliances.

Much to the annoyance of many engineers in the trade John Lewis claim that their products are, "Manufactured with reliable German technology they are developed with the latest engineering and electronic systems". To our knowledge not a single product is produced in Germany although some do appear to be based on AEG cosmetics which may or may not be the "German" design element of the claim. It is fair to say however that none or very few of the appliances that we have seen originate in Germany.

John Lewis have placed their appliances in that so-called "premium mass market" segment competing with Bosch, AEG and so on relying we expect quite heavily on the John Lewis branding to give these appliances some substance and offering a free three year warranty. This also prevents the machines from being price compared and allows John Lewis to maintain its price pledge to customers.

Indesit Domestic Appliances

Appliance Manufacturer & Brand Information

In 1930, Aristide Merloni founded Industrie Merloni in Albacina, on the outskirts of Fabriano. Business was initially concentrated on the production of weigh scales and subsequently diversified into liquid gas cylinders and hot water heaters. From this was born the Ariston brand name.

In 1975 the name changed from Household Appliances Division of Industrie to Merloni Elettrodomestici and to this day the company is still referred to in the trade as Merloni despite the name change in 2005 to Indesit Company.

It is worth noting however that this is not the same company as Antonio Merloni who produced the Servis Appliances in the UK as well as many branded products until they collapsed in 2008. Servis is now a Vestel brand.

Ariston and Indesit are the Company's two main brands in Europe. Also sold in Europe is the Scholtes brand and Philco.

In the UK Indesit now also own the Hotpoint, Creda and Cannon brands as well.

Ariston is the Company's "historic" brand. The Ariston brand focuses on the built-in appliance sector but is also ranked among the top players for free standing installations. In the UK however it is not a well regarded brand due to trade criticism and poor past reliability on some products after the well remembered "on and on" campaign of the 1980's.

Indesit is sold 36 countries throughout the world and 350 million people are aware of its existence. Indesit seems to be a low-cost brand and the appliances are often treated by repairers as more or less throw-away. Low prices have fuelled volume sales.

Many don't really see Indesit for being as large as they are but, they are one of the largest domestic appliance producers in Europe. In the UK alone they have a 38% share of the home laundry market (industry figures, 2010) and an almost 15% share of the entire European appliance market. It is a massive company.

In the UK we suspect that the large market share that Indesit has is driven purely by the Hotpoint brand name as many people do not realise that the Hotpoint branded appliances are no longer British or made in the UK.

During 2014 however the entire Indesit Group was bought by Whirlpool.

Traditionally both Indesit and Ariston have been at the lower end of the market trading purely on volume. Creda has for some time been used as a vehicle to access the low price volume market along with the old English Electric brand which is rolled out now and again.

Hotpoint is being traded in the low to mid sector of the market with some exceptions, such as the new Aqualtis machines which appear to be aimed squarely at Bosch. That aim appearing to be to push the Ariston and Hotpoint names to a more premium footing and leaving the others at the lower end of the marketplace.
